Default So damn confused about exhausts!

I have so much running through my head right now, it's killin' me! Do I want axle back or catback, 2.5" or 3.0", bassani/granatelli/magnaflow/borla/frpp's!! AGH!!! Everyone is telling me how great different systems sound. I obviously want a nice muscle car sound but I also want some more power! But then I hear that exhausts dont really give you more HP, but they are a weight reducer. WHAT SHOULD I BELIEVE!?!?! I know I want 3.0" exhaust, stainless steal, catback. Now, what I have to figure out is who makes it, and who has the best price.

Can I ask why? That seems like a helluva lot of work and money for minimal gains (if any).

Sure, I was told that gettin 'fatter' pipes would let the engine breathe a little bit more, therefore giving your car a little more HP. Is this not true?

In theory, that's true up to a point... but it can be overdone as well which will actually hurt power. There are many, many guys making 450-500 rwhp (and some even more), and many running 11s with a totally stock exhaust. I'm not convinced these cars benefit from anything over 2.5". Also, if you go with a 3", you'll need to start with the headers and go all the way to the tips to get rid of all the 2.5" stuff. I don't think your plan for just a catback upgrade will do much since the inlet side of the cats will still be 2.5".

The general consensus is to buy axlebacks and midpipes for sound, because there really isn't much power to be gained there. Cat deletes and headers should provide some power, but how much is still debatable.

Don,

So what your saying, basically, is to get a 2.5" exhaust, either catback or axle back. Going w/ 3.0" might hurt the car huh? Its all making some sense to me now.

You guys are a real help. Any more info is still greatly appreciated!

I don't think 3" will hurt you, it won't necessarily help either. The bottleneck in the flow from air filter to tailpipe happens way before the cats.
