Do you street race? Why or why not?

I don't go out looking for it, but if it comes to me, sometimes it's hard to resist!

During the last summer, I had a 02' Viper (ported heads, cam, ect) come for some and an n/a, Ligenfelter C6 car, I made both cars give me my race (30 roll) and handed both of them there a$$es. :beerchug: Both times on secluded sections of interstate with no intersecting roads and up to about 120mph or approx. half of 4th. These weren't planned runs, both cars found me.

What are your experiences and do you do it?

We've all done it at some point. Even the guys against it are against it because they've done it at some point and experienced a negative outcome. Everything in life has risk...even walking down the street. My thoughts on street racing:

Why do we build fast cars? To drive them fast. If you never feed speed to your ride, go buy and drive a Prius. The automotive hobby is a lifestyle choice. You either choose to be in it, or you don't. Are there always going to be idiots out there? Of course. The legal aspects are irrelevant completely because people will ALWAYS do it, despite what ever legislation is drafted/enforced. Unless someone finds a way to eliminate concious thought and free will, the speed contest (light to light friendly duel) will always happen. Is the track an option....of course. However, some people live hours away from the nearest track. If they can satisfy the urge by a brief speed contest or blast on a back road, it may be most realistic for them to do so. And inevitably, it's their choice. We just hope they listen to the timeless parental statement of "be careful". Long story short...people have suffered tragedy while street racing or known people who have. But, people have also been brutally raped, murdred, tortured, and other grotesqueries, tragically by the criminal element. There are punishments for those who commit crimes, and those who choose to violate them suffer the consequences when caught. Part of the rush/appeal to some, is the risk of getting caught. And to them, it's a worth wile risk.

The real reason we do this? Women. Quit laughing. Having a faster car than the other guy and proving it, gives that "bad boy" appeal to women. Deny/argue that all you want, most of us know that to be true. Who did the cheer leaders date when you were in high school? The dude's with the coolest cars. Superficial I know, but it's reality. Kicking someone's ass in a street race meant, you didn't have to physically kick their ass when a problem existed. Made it much easier to settle beef. All of these factors play a role in the big picture of the automotive lifestyle...which means as long as there are fast cars, street racing will ALWAYS be around. Unfortunately for those opposed, it's part of America's culture that the populace just has to deal with. Same with DUI's, criminal acts, etc. Complain away, but I for one, am a car guy...and always will be. I choose to embrace this lifestyle...and all aspects involved with it...because PRIUS' SUCK!

Long time ago I got 95 in a 45 and drag racing! Had to go to court and luckily got it knocked down to 2 counts of speeding and $250 fine. That pretty much ended my street racing days. I have grabbed a gear or two on the interstate a handful of a times...maybe 6 in 12 years teaching someone a lesson (or getting one lol).

I will find an empty patch of highway and try my car out alone. I save my racing these days for the track.

Yes, but not those late at night for money things. But it's hard to resist putting down that loud chevy beside you when the guy gets on it, or those pesky rice burners with a turbo. Usually I nail the brakes Hard as soon as I am ahead by a car length to avoid "those things that can go wrong", and never if there's any traffic at all.

That is one sweet stang, I normally don't like white cars but yours is making me a convert, are you taking it to Plunkett's mustang reunion in June (7th &8th)? Your driving got "smarter" after a run-in with the party poopers, I totalled out a car to get smarter, luckily no one was hurt.

Its not what it used to be from what I can remember. Now granted I'm not that old but from the time I started driving to now I can tell a lot has changed. The big thing is the risk don't out wiegh the benifits and cars and SOOOOO much faster now. I don't condone it but I don't endorse it either and I guess I chum it up to "situational" these days. I like to think there is a right-er or wrong ways when it comes to this.

The judge made me park my Black '93 Cobra for a year. This was in '95. My brother had a Red '91 GT at the time, we had installed police band scanners in both our cars and had hand-held walkie-talkies so we could talk to each other while we were being chased. One of us would get the cops to chase us for a while, then peel off and the other one would take over and get chased for a while. The confusion on the police scanner was hilarious. Nothing lasts forever, I got caught racing an IROC and the police finally had that Black Mustang they had been looking for. The only thing that saved my butt was the fact the guy in the IROC didn't have a driver's license. The judge made a deal with us that if I helped dude get his license back (loan him $1000) and he had me paid back by the time we went back to court, he would drop the drag racing charges down to reckless driving. Then he turned to me and told me because I was the guy they had been looking for, I had to park my Mustang for 11/29 or go to jail for 11/29. If I got caught driving it during my probation, it was 11/29 in jail for me. I went home and put my brand new '93 Cobra up on jacks. For a year. Battery disconnected, wheels off, car cover in place. I was living in an apartment at the time, I had the coolest coffee table on the planet - four '93 Cobra wheels under glass.

Not usually
My 'Street racing' has usually been confined to getting up to the speed limit 5 or 10 car lengths ahead of traffic when leaving a stop light only to 'lose' to that chevy Cobalt who comes flying past me at 75 in a 40 2 miles from the stop light.
Although once I was goaded by a 2011 srt Challenger that hammered the gas off a stop light and I didn't realize we were racing until he hit second gear.
I got him by 4th at 135 and then realizing that we were in a 35 mph zone I shut it down. The guy on a motorcycle behind us was more exited for my win than I was.
