    Default 66 GT350H 5.0 Coyote swap begins

I sold my 67Gt500 w/04 Cobra motor clone, and picked up this clean 66GT350H Clone that has a Heidts front end, 9", and 4 wheel disks already installed. I decided to go with a new 2011 5.0 crate motor and TKO600. I will have more pictures as we progress, but I can tell you that the crate motor factory headers do not fit, nor do aftermarket 2011 GT headers, so it appears we are going to have to make something. We also had to modify the oil pan to clear the crossmember. Im sure there are plenty more obstacles ahead. I will post updates as we progress.

We are currently in the process of building the motor mounts. We want to optimize the engine height and angle in relation to header, floor and steering shaft clearance. We hope to have the engine mounted and some kind of header resolution next week. We figured we would use the mid length headers supplied with the crate engine as a last resort, but they arent close to fitting between the frame rails at the rear flange. Updates next week

I really like that oil filter way out in front of the lower cross member. Wished the 4.6's were like that! Would make retrofitting these mod motors a lot easier!

Dude, I may have to get you to build me a car when I win the lottery.

my dream is build a 65-66 fastback and drop my setup in it. Can't wait to see your car finished.

Awesome setup! I couldn't think of a better motor to swap between the framerails of that car.

The wiring should be a breeze with the supplied wiring harness and PCM, shouldn't it?

Just out of curiosity, does the Coyote Crate motor come with an A/C compressor? You going to run A/C?

I know it doesn't come with a P/S pump. They already make brackets to be able to mount an earlier modular power steering pump to be able to use the Hydraboost system for power steering and brakes. Or do you have different plans? I'd like to see someone retrofit the EPAS rack and be able to fit a vacuum booster so there's one less pulley eating up power on the front of the motor.

Awesome awesome awesome! Keep posting the pics please!!!

Motorsport told us they will have a PS kit available soon, so I am holding out for that. Crate motor doesnt include AC. We have the frame mounts mocked up and started modifying the headers today. More pics tomorrow.

    Default 66 GT350H 5.0 Coyote swap begins

Awesome! I've been thinking stroked 351 Windsor for my perpetual/on hold 66 coupe project but a Coyote swap is very interesting (though that means losing the shock towers and more front end changes than I was planning).

    I'd love to see more!

Oh wow, look at that! I didn't even notice that the shock towers were GONE until you pointed that out.

Yea, it makes perfect sense for FRPP to offer a power steering kit with this motor to make it more swap friendly like they have done with the standalone wiring harness / computer.

You know, (interesting fact): I've seen more Coyote 5.0 crate motors than I have actual 2011 mustangs. That's a testament to how popular this engine really is.

The swap looks great so far!

It would be neat to be able to find some "vintage" machined aluminum / finned coil covers for that motor that pay homage to the period correct valve covers of that particular car.

Made some more progress. Finally optimized the engine location which allowed us to keep the power rack, use of the included headers (which we had to relocate a couple tubes), and made space for the included low-mount alternator. The only drawback is that we had to slightly modify the tunnel curvature for ample TKO clearance.

Hope to have the engine bay painted and the engine final-installed today, then we can build exhaust, and start on ECU location and harness routing.

What are the size differences in the new 5.0 compared to the 4.6 DOHC? Looks like a cool swap. The crate engine also isn't priced into the stratosphere which is nice.

Working on PCM mount, radiator hoses, and finishing the clutch cable conversion.

From what I have read, the new 5.0 has similar external dimensions as a 2V 4.6. The new DOHC heads are more compact than the existing DOHC heads. But, I'm sure ModulrGT500 has more exact knowledge of the dimensions of the motor, being that he is installing one.

It has the same engine mounts and bellhousing bolt pattern as a 4.6 or 5.4. It should be a bolt in deal for any modular equipped car, and should be just as straightforward as any 4.6 swap for any older model vehicle.

The Fuel system is done, and the Mustang Steve Clutch Cable kit is also installed. Also shown is the insulated "box" we decided to make for the PCM. I will get better pics of the fuel system once I get it up in the air again, and pictures of the mounted PCM.
