Well I have some good news for a change...I ended up getting the retainer and keepers to separate...I put a rubber vacuum cap on the valve then held it with a 9" long needle nose vice grip..then tapping on the retainer and it slowly started to separate.
Right now I just got back from the hardware store, I bought all the fittings I need to pressurize the cylinder to keep the valve from sliding down while I am installing the new spring, keepers and retainer....

You are doing all the right stuff Hendri. I know it is a PITA but it is the short way home compared to the alternatives.
