Hard time shifting into second

I have a '98 f150 with a 4.6 and a 5 speed. It's not a smooth shift into second. It's bumpy, noisy, and takes more force than it should. It doesn't grind, but it doesn't sound or feel right. When it gets warm, it shifts better. The truck only has 47,000 miles. What could be causing this issue?

I'd have to say it was.I swapped out the trans fluid with fresh ATF, but it made no difference. However, when I swapped synchromesh in, it made a world of difference. It not only improved the shift quality, but it also made the transmission significantly quieter.

This is a manual transmission. I'm sorry, I don't think I made that super clear. I fixed the issue by changing the transmission fluid to synchromesh. Thanks for the suggestion though.
