What's the definitive word on this set-up???

I've read a million different threads on it, but they all say something different:

10.5" '03 wheels + Nitto 315/35R-17's work great.

10.5" '03 wheels + Nitto 315/35R-17's don't work - tire is too narrow.

10.5" '03 wheels + BFG 315/35R-17's work great with NO spacers or funky button-head bolts.

10.5" '03 wheels + BFG 315/35R-17's don't work - tire is too wide.

Stock 9" '03 wheels + Nitto 315/35R-17's work great.

Stock 9" '03 wheels + Nitto 315/35R-17's don't work - tire bubbles-out too much.

It's all so confusing!!! For every person that says a combo above works great, there are 5 others who say it's unsafe and/or rubs.........

A 10.5 or 11 rim with the proper BS (7" for my 11's) will fit without issue.

You can technically fit a 315 on a 9" rim and plenty of people do it, but it is not safe for high speed handling; you will not get the same contact area as the same tire on a 10.5 or 11; and it's just not worth it IMO.

Buy the AFS replicas if you want to keep the stock appearance and have fun and peace of mind.

Angus, I have been wondering the same thing. I heard nittos are too narrow for the 10.5's and the BFG's rub. Now Ive heard of BFG 325's going on the 10.5 rim without a problem. Im just as confused as you are and waiting to see what people say. I will buy the nitto 315 for the stock rim as of now but I will wait a few days before I do purchace them.

Taken directly from their website :

Size 315/35R17 102V
Tread Depth 6.3
Inflated Overall Diameter 25.79
Overall Width 12.13
Approved rim (measuring rim) (10.5)-12.0
Maximum Load/psi [email protected]
Revs per mile 806

Nitto

Here they are on an 11" rim :

Putting a tire of this width on a 9" rim is just asking for trouble as well as not maximizing its potential.

Fact, not opinion.

AFS does not make a 17 x 10.5 wheel with the correct backspace for the IRS Cobra. Nobody else as far as I know makes the correct backspace for the 03 Cobra replica 10.5s for IRS either. I've run Nittos and BFGs on my 10.5s and here's the real deal..

315 Nittos.. button head bolts or the "undy mod" to your existing bolts (which btw is the safest way to go instead of the bolts available today)

315 BFGs (KDs or drag radials)... button head bolts or the undy mod...plus 7/32" spacers ( preferably lug/hub concentric)..

315 Nittos will work OK on the 9 inch rims, not optimum but they work. I ran 'em on my 9s before switching to the 10.5s

285s... nothing required..

Well I'll quote myself from StangNet or The Corral.....

You can put a 300# chick in a thong, still don't make it right ;)

TTT

What's the verdict?

I am looking into 2 AFS 10.5 wheels for the rear of my Cobra and would prefer to run the BFG D/R's as opposed to the crappy Nittos.....

What's the Final Answer????
