Hello all..

I am planning on buying a '93 Mark VIII motor with about 37,000 miles on it to swap into an '89 LX Mustang. Here are my questions: what are the differences between the early and later Mark VIII motors? I understand that there is a 260 hp version and a 280 hp version, what creates the hp difference? Likewise, what are the mechanical differences between the '96 through '98 Cobra motors and the Mark VIII?

Thanks for any help everyone!

I am unaware of a 260 HP version.

I think there was a 280, and then maybe 290?

The intakes on the early Mark VIII's are different, I think they changed in 96 or 97. Unless you cut your firewall, or beat a dent into it, the early model intake will not work. However you can easily swap to a 96-98 style Cobra Intake.

The Mark VIII engine has a weaker crank than the Cobra, and the exhaust manifolds are different.

The cams on the motor are also different.
