Driving this Cobra vs driving my old Ranger has put me driving roughly 20mph faster. I have been thinking of getting a radar detector, but was unsure of what brand/model to get. Anyone familiar with them enough to give me a suggestion? Thanks

After having a V1, the others seem like toys.

The V1 is so good, Escort put up a sham site radertest.com, just to win one test.

Seriously, with the directional arrows, and rader source count, it gives you the information you need to decide when you are coming up on a trap, etc. A detector that just beeps when there is radar somewhere around, is not nearly as useful.

In logic mode, the V1 still falses, although with the radar number display it is easy to tell the difference between door openers ( usually in pairs) and real traffic radar. of course I'd rather have a few falses than miss a real source. I hope they get around to adding GPS to it at some point (I guess bell has done this?) and it keeps track of where false sources are so it doesn't continually tell you about them.

i have a less expensive unit. and it doens't give any sort of directions just number of signals. the trick is to stick to familiar routs that way you learn where the false alarms are, and can react to the real ones.

If it isn't a Valentine it is a waste of money. All of the rest of them are 3rd rate detectors.

I have a V1 and it should be classified completely differently than the standard detector, as it is clearly superior to anything else based upon the extra information it provides. That being said, there are two or three others that will at least give you adequate warning if you don't want to take the plunge.

i take offence to you implying that my detector is trash. especially since it has saved me from many a speed trap.

the irony is thick for anyone that knows me.

I would like to get a Valentine. But in VA it is illegal to use a radar detector. If they caught you they used to confiscate it. OUCH!!!
Now I think you get a fine. Anyone know for sure???? If you get a ticket for using one, does it affect your insurance?

I drove about 300 miles with both a V1 and an escort 8500 on the windshield. (Had to turn off x-band on each because they would false each other). Both of them falsed at different times. No real pattern could be established. I noticed the V1 falsing a tad more but no biggie. The Escort would false at different sources. But more importantly, when a real radar source was encountered, they went off at exactly the same time, everytime. Not sure if the fact that they were both on at the same time affects the results but everytime a real radar signal was present they both were equal in their response time and distance. That being said, I actually prefer the Escort for some of the extra features. The auto-mute function is great. you don't have to hit a button to get it to quiet down. I also like the included remote display/mute power cord. It is an extra with the V1. But i have to give it to the V1 for those arrows. That is a reason in itself to buy the V1. Another feature with the 8500 is the Volt display which is convenieint for 03 Cobra drivers because that gauge is not included in the stock gauges. So as far as im concerned, its a toss-up as far as performance, so you need to take in account the features when making a decision. Price can be a factor, but when you are talking about a very expensive ticket, 100 dollars isn't that much.

Doug, they will confiscate it if it's not hardwired. Apparently they can't tamper with a hardwired one as it would risk stranding you on the side of the road and they would be obligated to assist you, not something they like to do, they're above that. What they do then is get it's serial number for court and advise you to remove it. I believe it's a $50 fine and if you have GEICO they will probably drop you. If it isn't hardwired they will confiscate it until after the court date then they must return it to you...of course I'm sure it will get dropped...probably repeatedly.
