I have 25.8 degrees of timing which and was wonderin of more in the 23 area would make my car run harder uptop?? I have a killer 1/8 mph but have always felt my car doesnt run out the back door like it should. Whats everyone's take??

Ask your bud Nitrous Pete what he thinks Harry, surely there has to be some reputable tuners out there that have some say on this??

Trey have you actually datalogged your car making 25.8 degrees timing and was it going down the road at wot or sitting still on a dyno? I have done both and there is a difference between the two when datalogging your car.FWIW i have dyno tested and track tested several chips that had 22-23 degrees timing and the one i use now has 25 degrees timing and that chip made more power on the dyno and especially at the track mph wise.Your car and chip is fine ;) you are one of the fastest guys on the board ET and MPH wise right now.I have said this before alot of mph clocks are not calculated correctly from my experience and from looking at other peoples mph that they post not all of them add up IMO.The only real way to compare your car against other fast cobras is to meet up with them at the same track same day and see how you stack up. By the way happy 23rd birthday :beer

Yeah I datalogged my car with the Hellion on the street and it made 25.8 @ WOT on a second gear pull, I hear what you are saying about the mph clocks and you are right Matt for sure. I also noticed that the Predator pulley tune has 26 degrees of timing which is also alot, I would like to know what alot of the top tuners put in their chips timing wise, I know Brian @ Apten uses 22-23 any others out there care to chime in?????????????

Adding timing past 23 degrees is splitting hairs..My car has 22 degrees.I think you need a little wiggle room incase the fuel you get is not up to par..Especcially this time of year with the oxiginated gas most of us have to use.
My friend Joe @ Mustang Magic tried a tune with 100 octane and more timing and it actually lost a few ponies..

I agree with Brian on this. Sure, it may make just a tidge bit more here and there with a lil more timing (I've seen less than 5-10 rwhp with several degrees more timing), but as he said, why push it? It's not worth risking an expensive engine. In a custom tune, I don't put in more than 23 degrees total at the upper rpms. Believe it or not, I've seen/heard of some running as high as 26 to 28 on an '03 Cobra (say WTF?, yep!). That's near GM LS1 territory!

Always remember that altitude, weather, loading, etc. will affect overall timing. Also, always go for a street ride after getting tuned on the dyno to check overall timing under load, especially if you're running an aggressive street/race file, as you're more prone to ping on the street than you are on the dyno (why a load style dyno is best to tune on, honestly, especially on a vehicle that's a bit heavier than say a Dynojet's roller weights).

Oh, and Trey, to answer your question, yes, too much timing will kill top end power.

It's all about optimizing the low, mid, and top range, to make great power, safely.

Regards...

Great info RWTD, I really am happy with the way my car runs through the 1/8 but just think it lacks some on top which is evident by it picking up 22-23mph from 1/8-1/4 when I think it should pick up 25. But like others have said I think my 25.8 of total timing is killing mph at the end of the 1/4. Any others??

I have logged mine on the Hellion tool also and I get 23.8 degrees of advance in 3rd and 4th. You felt how my tune felt in your car, it felt a little lazy in the lower rpm's IMOP probably because of the timing. It was also soaked a tad by the time we swapped chips. I would of liked to make it to the track and seen.

I think your car is running very good, the high mph in the 1/8th could of been effected by shifts points and a variety of things. Your car runs 122 in the 1/4 in some weather that could leave some room for improvement IMOP. Your are within the top 10 eaton times. Another tune "could" pick you up some, but I dont think you will see the earth shattering gains like you want.

Yeah I do think the added timing down low and through the middle really makes the car feel great and plus it really pulls hard through the 1/8th evident by the mph's, maybe if I have a degree or so pulled out it may run a tad better or it may fall off who knows! I know this race tune didny make any more power on the dyno than my friends regular tune, with all my mods and my race tune i made 456 and 478 in 90 degree weather, my friend with his 2.93 car , no throttle body and no catback just welded in Flows all the other mods the same and he has just a reg. diablo tune, his car made 451 and 460 so not that far off mine and i had several mods on him and a race tune to boot? We all know dyno numbers dont mean a thing and I am pretty happy with the way my car has ran at the track but I am just looking for more, everyone knows how it is and I have said it before I think the tune is everything on these cars!

Trey, consider that some aftermarket timing boxes (MSD etc) have a function that allows you to trigger them when you are in top gear only so that it may remove 1-3 degrees of timing. I used to understand and be able to articulate all the rationale behind it but can't do a great job of it right now. It has to do with wind resistance and the duration of time spent in that gear (work) that makes a little less timing valuable in that situation. I remember an old Hot Rod article from back in the 80's I think that track tested and proved the value of retarding some timing in top gear only.. old drag racers trick.

I have always been told that more timing makes more bottom end power while less timing makes more topend power, thats the approach I used when getting my stock with bolt on's 93 Cobra in the twelves a year or so ago! To much timing and the mph dropped!
