The wife and I are entertaining the idea of getting a dog and I'm looking for suggestions. We have ALL hardwood floors or tile in the house, with a steep staircase to the second floor and we want a dog that will be baby/kid friendly to be safe for the future. Not looking for a tiny dog, but not looking for a 120lb+ beast either. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Ok, one other requirement no bigger than right around 30lbs.

My wife and I have 2 beagles and a bassett hound. They're great dogs around kids. One word of caution, these dogs are a nose with legs. They sniff and occasionally wander off, when they're nose gets the best of them. Other than that I think they would be a great dog to have. But I'm prejudice. Good luck with whatever you decide to get.

Border Collie.
You will never be allowed to lie around and get fat.
A BC will be training you in no time.
A BC will prove to be smarter and more determined than your children.
And a BC (unlike children) will learn and absolutely obey up to 30 voice, gesture, and whistle commands.

My wife loves weiner dogs but she is afraid their little legs would be too short to get up and down the steps. Maybe Eric or Elisa could chime in on that. I know Eric loves his 10lb weiner. I'm only assuming Elisa does too. LMAO

We have a Maltese/Poodle cross. She's only 12lbs, and smarter than hell. Doesn't shed and was taught to go to the bathroom on a dog diaper. No early morning freezing outing's. Flies with us all the time. Best pet we've ever had. And doesn't bark 24/7 either.

West Highland Terriers are good dogs, fun as well. Not really a small dog but not big either. 12-22 lbs depending on male or female. They are the dogs that are in the Cesar dog treat commericals

pound for the win.We have 2 from the pound and love them to death. We are now watching the shelter for a Pyr to replace the one we lost at thanksgiving. But they get a bit bigger than 30lbs.BTW you consider 30lbs a large dog?

Go to the pound and let a dog pick you. You don't pick the dog, no matter what, they always pick you..

The best dog I've ever owned is my 90lb Doberman Pinscher. He's 12 years old, and we got him as a puppy. He's grown up right beside my kids, and loves them to death. Noone will come near them when they're outside playing in the fenced in back yard either, which is a bonus.

My best advice is since you have children, get a puppy no matter what breed. When puppies grow up around kids, they are more tolerant of the things small children will do to them. When my kids were small, they thought the Doberman was a playground, and climbed all over him, pulled his ears, probably poked him a few times, fell on him while playing, etc. and he's never done as much as growl at them. He grew up with them, so he's used to it.

I like terriers in the classic black and tan coloring. Not a fan of the standard haircut - to me they look best furry and fuzzy. All are pretty energetic, fun, and can have great little personalities. Yorkies are probably too small, but they can jump so I think would eventually be able to handle stairs. Airedales are moderately large but a bit more sweet and sedate. Welsh Terriers are in-between and might be the right size.

+1 on breed rescue organizations if you can get a puppy.

boxer! my sister has one and it has the best personality and great with kids. shes 55 pounds so thats almost double what you want for size. but its the best dog ever!

The 30lb size is something my wife wants. I'm used to big and small dogs. My Dad has a 125lb Rottweiler and 15lb Italian Greyhound right now. She wants a lap dog that isn't too hyper. I'd be perfectly happy with an Italian or two. I think they are great little dogs but not what she's looking for.

We have those next door. She has 2 or 3 small poodles and a couple of other small dogs. They bark every time the wind blows and she keeps them outside now that it is warm in a cage almost every day. Annoy's the piss out of my wife.

quick call to animal control and the local police department will fix that problem.

i have this mangy ass ****ing worthless mutt about 300 yards diagonal from our back deck, that just barks for hours on end. they'd put the god damn piece of shit out at 6 am, and run off to work, and it would just bark and bark for hours on end. put up with that shit for about a year, and finally i called the police and animal control, and they told them either shut the dog up, or we'll take the animal from you.

been a lot quieter around here now. i still hear the dog once in awhile, but never longer than 5 - 10 minutes when they let it out to use the bathroom, and then they take the piece of shit back inside where it belongs.

oughta be a state requirement, you have to send your mutt to obedience school when you buy one so it can be taught to obey and not bark incessantly for no reason at all.

god damn people are so ****ing rude and inconsiderate these days, they don't think how their actions affect other people. if I had my way HOA's should not allow dogs in subdivisions period. you want to own a mutt, move your ass out on some country road where your barking piece of shit can't keep anyone else awake at all hours of the night/early morning.

That's the exact reason I won't live in a neighborhood with a HOA association. Not that I'd ever let one of my dogs go barking day in and day out, but I don't want anyone telling me what I can and can't do or own because of a HOA.

my living situation is temporary. just renting while I'm in school, once I'm done with college and get a job, im building a house on 5 acres out in the country away from people, so I don't have to listen to that shit.

most people have dogs JUST to own one, because they think it's some kind of ****ing toy, and they never do anything with it.

if I'm gonna have a dog, it's going to have a purpose (security/protection, bird hunting, rabbit hunting, etc).

not just so I can post cute little pictures up on facebook, and say oh lookie at my cute dog that barks all the time and really has no purpose other than it shits and eats and barks and sleeps.

the fact that people have dogs, and move into subdivisions, and have no respect for their neighbors, is the prime reason I WILL NEVER buy a house that is in a subdivision, much less one ran by an HOA.

I think we're in agreement then LOL.

You are so freaking bitter and negative all of the time. How do you make it through the day? I'd hate to have to be in close proximity to you.

We have a great house in a non-HOA neighborhood. I have 3 small wiener dogs and 2 medium sized rescues. I bring them in at night out of respect for the neighbors but in reality I really don't give a rats ass if they bark all day and night. They are dogs, barking is what they do. If there were a HOA, I know they would frown upon me having that many dogs and would likely change rules to make a maximum amount of dogs allowed. So in reality the HOA would help the problem you speak of. But since there is no HOA and nobody can tell me what to do, they can KMA if they don't like my dogs barking.
because ignorant people just piss me off Elisa. if everyone took a little to be respectful, then it wouldn't be an issue.

dogs can bark, but when they're left outside and they just bark incessantly at absolutely nothing for hours on end and their stupid ****ing owners pretend like everything's ok, and leave the dog out, then I have a problem, because my peace is getting disturbed, and I don't want to hear someone's piece of shit yapping at all hours of the morning or night when I'm trying to get some damn sleep.

this is why I prefer cat's over dogs. they don't make as much noise, less mess to clean up, and cat's are very independent animals.

I've got 2 beagles that are of the 13'' variety. They typically weigh between 21-26lbs. I use these dogs for hunting and as pets second. Oldest dog is 12 and the young one is 2. Really great dogs. I brought the 12 year old dog in as a companion for the wife while i'm at work. Easy to house train them, they listen to commands well, as long as their nose isn't down.

I'm waiting for my 2 year old to come into heat. I have a nice 13'' male that i trained this winter to rabbit hunt, to come over and be the stud.
