Hey everyone,
I finally stepped up and bought a 1994 Mark VIII. Gonna install the engine and trans into my '59 F100. This is my first real dealing with a EFI swap.
So, big question is, what manual or manuals will I need do this right?
I read tons of posts on here and couldn't find a sticky.
I've got the whole car, to rob from. Planning on dieting the wiring harness myself.
Any tips or tricks that might make the job easier?
Not really planning any major HP gains right now but I might in the future. I kinda like the look of the COP valve covers. Any special wiring requirements to change over to that?
Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The 94 EVTM is essential to understanding the wiring harness. You should be able to find one on Ebay. There is a guy on this forum, The Red Monster, that makes the harness to go to COP. It uses waste spark to make the non COP cars work.

I found my electrical & vacuum troubleshooting manual along with a service manual for pretty cheap on ebay. Make sure that you get the manuals for year specific.
Buy a number sticker book at Home Depot in the electrical section so you can document all of the wires for later use. Document everything that you can because you will get confused and this will help you remember what all of the wires are for. I did my harness myself and it took quite a bit of time but if you take your time it isn't bad to do.
I bought a cop harness from Red Monster and it worked perfect. You will also need the cop valve covers.

Thanks mustangbob06! Went and ordered the wiring manual from helm.
I read somewhere I'm going to need a pin removal tool? Is that true?
Also, after more reading, I'm going to need to get the computer reflashed. Is there someone thats a member here that can do this?

For the 94 Mark VIII you will need a prom type chip to get rid of the unwanted items in the ECM instead of reflashing. Moates quarterhorse makes an override chip that is programmable if you understand all of the binary codes. I checked the codes on mine and then disconnected the service engine light.
I have been looking local for someone to make a chip for me and haven't found anybody yet. I want to use someone local so in case I miss something it will be easier to get it redone.

that is more like it. I paid $15 for my copy of the EVTM. I dont see any need for the shop manual. The EVTM has everything you need to know for this, in my opinion.

Congrats on the new project. I too am in the process of swapping the 94 MkVIII drivetrain into my 63 Fairlane. I have paged through the EVTM and it's perfectly laid out. They even have plug pin-outs in it. I've done the swap into my 63 Galaxie a few years ago but never finished and sold the drivetrain. I'll get it done again. The wiring is actually pretty simple. If you are not running the light harness, power seats or any of that nonsense, you can just pull the dash and get all the wiring from under there. There are a few things you'll need from it. Then make sure you get the harness from the transmission that goes through the grommet just under the front of the shifter. The tranny is computer controlled and you need that harness.

You can pull the IRS from the Lincoln and put it under the truck too. It has the 4.25 bolt pattern versus your 5.5 or the common 4.5" pattern. That's able to be swapped or re-drilled too. There are a ton of wires you will not likely use. You can run the controller for the fan and AC or you can just delete it and run the fan on a breaker and thermistor on it's own. I'm going with the factory stuff first. You can also have the EGR stuff and Evap Canister stuff deleted from the computer if you send it out. You luckily don't have the PATS or other security system. They suck.

The only issue you may encounter is the oil pan. It's a rear sump and if you set the engine low and back enough, you may have steering or I beam clearance issues if you lower the truck any. I'd take the radiator, fan and steering parts and look to swapping them into the truck. You can get a different AC unit as the Lincoln one is quite complicated with climate control and all that. It didn't look like it'd fit under the dash of my 57 F100 either so I just tossed it all except for the pump.

I think I'll be doing the COP option later on as well. That along with some good header design and exhaust as well as a good intake will surely help the engine produce.

Good luck and show pics. If you can tell by my thread, I love pics. They help give you and others ideas.

Dave,
Gonna use the engine and transmission mainly. I've already installed jag running gear in my truck, so, fitting the 4.6 shouldn't be a problem. I've already got the EVTM wiring harness drawing coming from Helms right now. I'm gonna pull every bit of wiring, then, sort thru it like Kevin did. I have a few pics of the truck I'll try to keep everyone updated with.First is the Jag front end installed, second is the Jag rear end and last pic is how it currently looks.

Very nice setup. I should do that with mine. I have the MkVIII rear in the bed of mine now waiting for install and 4.5" swapover. I'm really liking the idea of finding a wrecked 03 and up Crown Vic to steal the front end and drivetrain out of for it.

Here is a pic of mine as it site with the 390/C6 stock suspension on it now. Not sure why it rotated.......

Nice truck Dave. Are you on Facebook? There is a really good group of guys on FB, that are nothing but '57-'60 Ford Fridge trucks. The groups name is Custom Classic Ford F100 Trucks 1957 1958 1959 1960 F-100 Rat & Hot Rods.

No. I am on 2 Fairlane FB groups. I wouldn't mind joining a fridge one. I think your Jag stuff is really going to make that thing handle. And factory 280-300hp is going to get it going fairly well. I'm going to go 2V with mine and probably go blower or turbo if I keep it and continue. We're debating selling it to help fund the down payment on the retirement home. We'll see. I have a few toys to weed out.

Just requested access to the group. Thanks!!!

When you go to set the engine down in the truck, check the pan clearance with the rear steer Jag unit. I ran into a problem with my son's 63 F100 that the pan hit the rack. We are using the 5.4 DOHC engine in that truck. Moroso makes a oil pan that will give you the clearance that you need for the rack if it hits.
How far did you relocate the shocks inward on the Lower control arms??? I moved Nick's inward2 inches and that is supposed to be enough.

Thanks for the info on the oil pan Kevin. Gonna be a little bit before the engine and trans are installed. I didn't realize actually how much wiring was on the Mark VIII!
I know I'm not gonna use hardly any of it but Im gonna remove everything just to make sure! Sure wigh that wiring harness diaghragm would hurry up and get here!

Quick update!
Engine and trans have been pulled! Whoever designed that stupid drivers side exhaust with a cat on it needs to be slapped! Glad I wasn't planning on saving anything on this car!
Wiring removal has begun and should be done with it one evening this week.
After getting this out, I really don't like the look of the rear mounted Throttle body.
Will a '98 mark VIII intake bolt on to the heads I have? I've found one at a local junkyard with a decent price.

The trans loom is under the passenger seat and the trans O/D switch wiring is under the drivers seat. I had to completely disassemble the dash to get all of the wiring out of the car. It was a real PITA. Remove all of the wiring even back to the keyless entry in the trunk and the fuel pump safety switch in the trunk.

I assume that you know all this so this is just a reminder from my experience. Tag everything that you can, it will make it easier when you start to dissect the harness.

I knew there were some things under the seat but I didn't know exactly what. I've got the front harness removed, the dash and the wiring that goes to the trans. which was under the console. Almost have all the wiring out of the drivers door. Labeling everything just like you suggested. Most of it is easy to replug(ie dash to main harness), it's those little wiring drop offs you gotta label or you'll forget where they went!

i have used this computer and drivetrain in a 62 falcon. there are some things that can be deleted/modified. i have all wiring diagrams and have done away with the vcrm and still have the ac controlled by the computer.

btw the stock tune is horibly rich and the trans shifts like **** if you get a quarrterhorse i can give you a tune that makes things more better.

ill edit and comment the daigs later when i have more time

Ashford, what is "Quarterhorse"?
Also, took a long look at the diagrams you posted up. Are these the same that's in the Service manuals?
I've been reading the manuals and I'm learning this might take me a little longer than I thought.
My first thoughts were to just delete stuff I don't need, ..ie, anything to do with the lights, radio and amp, anything in the doors.
That stuff I'm not using at all, all I need is the basic's. to run and shift correctly!...LOL
Any thoughts from anyone would be greatly appreciated!

Here is a pic of my harness laid out on the patio.

This is what I was down to when I finished and then I actually deleted a few more wires before I was done.

I deleted the VCRM out of mine like ashford did.

Love those pictures Kevin!
I'll be glad when the car is outta my shop so I can work on the wiring.
Thanks Ashford for posting up the wiring!
Hopefully someone has done the intake switch too.

Ashford, right now I'm not. I would love to but my budget say's no! That's why I was asking about a later model mark VIII intake. The design is much better looking and it helps me by getting the throttle body away from the firewall. I was a local junkyard this weekend and they had a '98 mark that had everything still attached. No parts had been removed and the price was right. And thanks again for posting the zip file. It, my Lincoln books and a monster wiring harness drawings will come in handy when I start dieting the harness.

If you have the 97 ECM and harness, you can have the PATS turned off. Not sure what other issues you will have with the old harness and ECM on the newer motor. The IRMC's on the 97 and later are electric, the ones 95 and prior are vacuum. 96 is a one off year with a hybrid.
