Is tinting legal or what?

Ok. I gotta ask some questions here. I’m thinking about tinting my windows. Not a big surprise lots of people do it and some look good some look bad but most often they look good. Well there’s a slight problem, ITS AGAINST THE LAW.

I’m sick of looking up all of these site and researching information on how much tint i can put on and how visible my face has to be and worrying about some officer pulling me over and giving me a fixit ticket or a fine cause its too dark. I toss and turn at night thinking about it wondering am i just giving myself more reason (besides being in a sports car) for a cop to pull me over? I drift into worry on my commute home wondering... am i just a decision away from having to pull my tint off and show it to a court THEN pay my fine?

And just as I’m at the peak of my paranoia... I see it.... a god damned mini Van or corolla or even a Magnum or charger with what looks like 100% tint.

Not only can i NOT recognize the face I cant even see a silhouette... heck, i cant even see the other side of the car. and eventhough they don’t tint the windshield its so dark inside you can make anyone out. Its at this time im thinking.. why do THEY get to drive around with SUPER dark windows? isnt it against the law here (in california) to have it past a certain level on the drivers and passenger front windows? arent we supposed to be pulled over and fined? yet people STILL have the tint super dark. ALL over the place. which leads me to believe it UP to the officer whether or not they wanna pull them over. I think this is crap. cause id like to have dark windows myself but i just dont know if its against the law anymore... but chances are if i do it imma be in hot water in five seconds.

So really asking anyone out there in cali or any state with tint laws (which i think is all of them) have tinted windows that are over the legal visibility limit? Can we or should we push for legislature ENDING the window tint law since cops dot really enforce it. if they did you NEVER see them (californians think about that under chassis neon ricer crap. you rarely see it cause you know cops dont joke with that)

Either give me my dark tint or DONT GIVE ANYONE tint.. but lets get some consistency here. I dont know what to do. Anybody get pulled over for it? How often? Anybody know how highway patrol officers prioritize? Is it even worth it?

My friend has limo tint all the way around his camaro...except the windshield. The other week he got a ticket for having it on the driver and pass windows. But the kicker is that a few days before he got that ticket we were driving around and pulled up RIGHT NEXT TO a cop at a stop light. He looked at us and we both thought he was gonna pull us over...but no....just kept on driving. I agree with you that if one cop is gonna write a ticket...the rest should...or the other way around. i'd just prefer no tickets at all...less expensive :thumb3:

Just some points to make. One there are cops out there that understand that isn't a big deal, they probably like to have a nice looking car also. But there are others that will pull you over for any law that you break because they are idiots. These are the power trip cops. Just know if your tint is real dark and you get pulled over you are more likely to be taken out of the car for the cops safety because they can't see inside of the car. Point #2 I don't know how it works in your state but in mine you get a ticket for a repair order, you have a certain amount of days to take the car and get it inspected to see if the repair has been made. If you know a cop, take the repair order to them and have them sign the ticket and you are good to go.

After a ticket, I had to remove the door window tint on mine. But it was scratched anyway.

yeah but did you put it back don? i mean i think the law is so arbitrary that we need to get rid of it... if a cop is suspicious of you he can pull you over for NO reason. we give them the right when we get our drivers licenses and if im not going to jail for a crim i didnt commit ill gladly pull over for him if i fit a description (and lets face it i fit a few descritpions.)

but the whole tint law just seems broken. i wanna know i wont get a ticket. and if i do then idont wanna see other people with illegal tint. its simple.

If you want window tint, then tint them.

What do you think is going to happen, you think you'll go to jail. If you want the tint, pay the damn fix it ticket if you get pulled over.

In CA, you are not allowed to tine the front windows at all.

I'm amazed to see this type of a thread on Mod Fords?!?

I don't know about all of you, but in Los Angeles, nearly every car out there is tinted on the front windows and cops don't do a damn thing because they know its a lost cause. It's similar to the fact that almost everyone goes 80 in a 65 even though its breaking the law, and cops don't do anything about it because the entire flow of traffic is over the speed limit.

Now of course you run an increased risk with having a shiny new mustang, but when I was pulled over I didn't receive a ticket for my tint, nor my front license plate, so I'm sure it depends on a few factors, the most important one being the specific cop and what his mood is.

Since we both live here in riverside I dont recomend running anything darker than the legal limit but if it were LA you could get away with it like Zeio said. I dont know, it's different out here where its not as common to have limo tint. But You could run a little darker than legal and still be ok. Just drive the speed limit. lol!

I think that says it all. I am in riverside and I have limo on the back and 1/4 windows and dark on the doors and dark strip on front window. I also have no front license plate and no cats and those who have heard my car will tell you it is LOUD. I have NEVER been hassled by the cops for any of it. (after 12K miles). I honestly believe it's how you carry yourself while driving on the street and just bum luck to catch a bad cop on a bad day. JMO

Not yet... the motor broke shortly after I removed it. Tint ended up very low on the priority list.

Here the law states 70% of light must pass through the front driver and passenger side windows.
Some cop cars here are equipped with measuring devices.
The primary reason for this law is for the safety of the police officers who pull people over.

That said, I have had 35% or darker tint on all my cars for the last 20 years with the exception of my 05. I have never received a ticket or even a warning for dark tint.

When I get pulled over I immediately lower both my front windows and turn on my interior lights. I also have my papers in my hand and both hands clearly visible on the steering wheel.

I know it's common sense but my cop friends tell me all the time that they can't believe how many people are fumbling in the car looking for things when they're pulled over.

I don't think the cops are on a "power trip". I believe the reason behind the no tint laws are because if a cop is pulling you over and you have tinted windows he cannot see in the car and that's dangerous for them. Here in IL it is illegal to have tint on the front driver side, front passenger side and front windows.

I don't necessarily agree with it, but then again I don't have a gun inside my car. I've had more than my fair share of "warnings" for my tint and I know I'm on borrowed time for getting a ticket. It's not like we all don't know what our tint laws are. If you are breaking a law, you should be able to pay the price. IMO

Yeah this isnt a complaint ABOUT the law itself. just the enforcement. I understand the danger of approaching a car without being able to see but if the law is you cant have a certain tint. i should expect to see people really following it. I just dont think that there is consistency.

You are right, there is no consistency, and thank god or I'd have no license.. EVER. haha:drugs:

According to my friend who is a CHP officer, in California there is a limit to how much tint you can put on your front three windows. It is very light, and most CHP vehicles have it on.

I went with light tint on my side windows, which is equal to some of the CHP cars according to my friend. I did this inorder to not be messed with or receive a ticket.

Well, I was pulled over because I had no front license plate on my car. It was broken off by a California Transportation Worker knocking a construction cone into the road. in front of me.

I explain why there is no plate, and he remarks, "well good, since you are fixing the front, you can take care of the fix it ticket." I tell him, "I won't receive money from Caltrans till past the court date though."

He then asks me to roll up my passenger side window. That's right, I was driving with my windows down!!! WTF? He tells me tint is not legal and proceeds to write me a ticket to fix that as well. I tell him about my eye condition, to which he replies, "Well then you can show that in court."

Yes cops do abuse their powers, and they are on Power Trips.

Anyways, I now have my prescription for tinted windows. It is a ligit prescription, and it will help my night driving. Since I have my prescription, I'll be going Limo all the way around. I hadn't planned on it, but since I had to pay for the doctors appointment, I might as well take full advantage of the prescription.

By the way, getting a prescription for tinted windows is not easy. I have had a cornea transplant, so I have a real effect on my eye by the extra light.

yup.. and cops want to know why we hate them.. haha.. too many a-holes that out shine the good cops... very sad
"good cops?" i dont understand.

heheh its very easy to abuse the power if your having a bad day etc. you cant hold it against them really. if i was pissed and pulled somone over who has a cooler car than me id make him hop on one foot just cause i could.

Having limo tint all the way around is cool but having a NEED for tinted windows is not. Must suck to be that sensitive to light. Needless to say im not even asking for tint really just knowing that cops pull over tint offenders as much as they pull over speeders. or just dont pull us over at all.

I'm not too bad off, but just enough to be a problem. I'm just lucky that my eye sight was better than 20/20 before the accident, or I'd probably be legally blind. I'll probably be leaving the service with about 80% disability.

The tint actually helps at night. during the day there is so much light that there is not much glare. I tried sunglasses at night to no availe.

As far as I know, you cannot legally tint the front windows at all. Nada. The following quote is from the CHP website: http://www.chp.ca.gov/html/answers.html

The main requirements for legal window tinting in California are:
  1. The windshield and front driver's side and passenger's side windows cannot receive any aftermarket tinting.
  2. If the rear window of a vehicle is tinted, the vehicle must have outside rearview mirrors on both sides.
